- rhizomes are lightly colored and extensive.
- rhizomes can be dried for storage.
- eelgrass may contain herring spawn, which is also edible.
- look for eel grass in wave-protected areas, rooted in muddy/sandy areas.
- edible lookalike: surf-grass (Phyllospadix scouleri).
- edible lookalike: sea-grass (Phyllospadix torreyi).
