  • varieties in Alberta are Black currant (Ribes americanum), Northern black currant (Ribes hudsonianum) and Prickly currant (Ribes lacustre).
  • grows in moist foothill and montane woods.
  • warning: Northern black currants may cause diarrhea and stomach upset if eaten in quantity.
