  • berries are sweet, in clusters of many
  • berry smells like wet sheep, has one flat seed
  • leaf is finely toothed, has flat ('winged') leaf stalk
  • shrub/tree grows as tall as three-story house

Look-alikes in Ontario

Downy arrowwood (Viburnum rafinesqueanum) is similar-looking but produces less palatable berries. It differs in that it is a smaller (under 1.5 m) shrub, the leaf stalks are small or absent, and the leaves are hairier on the underside.
