Look-alikes in California

A number of inedible or poisonous species of Clitocybe are similar in appearance but differ in that they are terrestrial, rather than growing from wood. The edible but uncommon Panus neostrigosus is similar in appearance but differs in that it exhibits tufts of erect hairs on the cap. The edible Sarcomyxa serotina can have a similar appearance. It differs in that the cap is slimy and often includes greenish hues, and the gills and spore deposit are yellowish.
