Western Painted Suillus
- cap is dry and scaly
- pores are large and bruise brown
- stem has a thin ring
- cap's flesh does not discolor when cut

Look-alikes in California
The probably edible Suillus ponderosus differs in that the cap is smooth and sticky when moist. In addition, when young it has a veil that is sticky and orange/yellow.
