Western Painted Suillus

  • cap is dry and scaly
  • pores are large and bruise brown
  • stem has a thin ring
  • cap's flesh does not discolor when cut

Look-alikes in California

The probably edible Suillus ponderosus differs in that the cap is smooth and sticky when moist. In addition, when young it has a veil that is sticky and orange/yellow.
