Beefsteak Fungus

  • grows at the base of hardwoods
  • exudes a dark red liquid when squeezed
  • flesh is marbled and resembles raw meat
  • underside has whitish pores, not gills
  • lacks a stalk-like stem

Look-alikes in Ontario

The inedible Ganoderma tsugae can be superficially similar in appearance. It differs most obviously in that the flesh is hard and does not exude a red juice when squeezed.
