• cap is smooth and radially lined
  • cap becomes black and inky when old
  • clusters at base of trees/stumps
  • spore deposit is blackish
  • do not consume with alcohol (48 hrs)

Look-alikes in Alberta

A number of potentially poisonous mushrooms are superficially similar in appearance but do not match all the key characteristics of this species. For example, the similar-looking but not-recommended Coprinopsis variegata differs in that the cap is scaly and oval-shaped when young.
