Look-alikes in British Columbia

The similar-looking but inedibly bitter Hydnellum scabrosum differs in that it is smaller (under 10 cm broad), the cap has reddish or purple tones, and the stem base is olive-black. The inedible (or less favored) Sarcodon squamosus differs in that the cap is darker and has a center that is rarely depressed, the cap edges remain incurved, and it grows under pine.
