  • underside of leaf has red hairs on midrib
  • tree grows as high as a six-story building

Look-alikes in Ontario

Various species of buckthorn (Rhamnus) have similar-looking berries that are inedible or toxic. They differ in that they are multi-stemmed shrubs rather than trees, and the berries are less shiny and typically contain more than one seed.
