Chokecherry

  • cherries are bitter, occur in long clusters
  • cherry is shiny, has a single, spherical stone
  • leaf is sharp-toothed, widest above middle
  • tree grows as high as two-story house

Look-alikes in Ontario

Various species of buckthorn (Rhamnus) have similar-looking but toxic berries. They differ most obviously in that the berries are less shiny and typically contain more than one seed.
